He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer, graphic designer and film critic.

He wrote several short stories and Novels, meant primarily for young children and teenagers. His most popular science fiction stories are the scientist, Professor Shanku, Feluda, the sleuth and he was created popular fictional characters. Creator of the two most popular characters in Bengali literature. Notable works are- Bishoy Chalochitra, Ekai Bole Shooting, Sera Satyajit, Nayan Rahasya, Aro Satyajit, Bachhai Baro, Ek Dozon Feluda, Baro Bhuter Golpo, Gupi Bagha Phire Elo, Apur Panchali, etc.
He was awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University. He got the highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1992 by the Government of India. He was born on 2nd May, 1921 and died on 23rd April, 1992 when he was 70 years old.
