Poet Surendranath Majumdar was born in Jessore district of undivided Bengal. He was a a significant poet and storyteller of the nineteenth century. He was fluent in Sanskrit, Persian and English and skilled in philosophy and literature. His written notable poetry-books are- Shararitubarnan (1856), Sabita Sudarshan (1870), Phullara (1870), Barshabartan (1872), Mahila (1880) etc.
