From October 1930 to August 1933, GLIMPSES OF WORLD HISTORY was written while in various prisons in India. The author was then imprisoned for the crime of participating in India’s freedom struggle. He took the opportunity of prisoner-leisure and began writing about world history.
He wrote these in a letter addressed to his young daughter, as he often had no opportunity to oversee her education due to his imprisonment. Pandit Nehru compiled the letters when he was on short leave, before being re-arrested on February 12, 1934, and sentenced to two years in prison for treason.
Then in 1934, his sister, Mrs. Vijayalakshi Pandit, arranged for the publication of these letters in book form under the title GLIMPSES OF WORLD HISTORY. The book is not just a description of events. As valuable as it is in terms of description, it also contains the imprint of the writer’s personality. The author’s extraordinary nous and sentimental mind have made this history book unique.
