Rani Rasmani (1793-1861) was a zamindar, social worker, and religious. She was born on 26 September 1793 in a poor peasant family in the village of Kona, North 24 Parganas. She was married at the age of eleven to Rajchandra Das who was a wealthy businessman and zamindar of Calcutta. After the death of her husband at the age of forty-three, she took charge of the family estate and business and soon showed her skill in this responsibility.
But apart from all this, she is the founder of Dakshineswara Kalibari and one of the patrons of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Rani Rasmani gained fame for her various philanthropic work. She built a road from Subarnarekha River to Puri for the convenience of the pilgrims. She also built the famous Babughat, Ahiritola Ghat, and Nimtala Ghat in Calcutta for the convenience of Ganga bathing for the residents of Kolkata. This great lady contributed a lot of money to the establishment of the Imperial Library (now the National Library of India) and the Hindu College (now Presidency University). Ranima was honored as ‘Lokmata’ for her kindness to the common people.
